What is a Warmblood?

Warmblood simply distinguishes this type of horse from the “cold bloods” (draft horses) and the “hot bloods” (Thoroughbreds, Arabians, etc.) Sport horse refers to the intended use of the breed, as a competitive and recreational horse for the major international equestrian disciplines of dressage, jumping, three day event and driving. Most warmblood breeds are continuing to evolve. In fact, they are not “breeds” in the sense that Thoroughbreds,Arabians, Morgans and Saddlebreds are breeds. Warmbloods do not have closed stud books. Other breeds are often introduced to the gene pool to reap the benefits of hybrid vigor, and to speed and improve the evolutionary process of attaining the breeding goal.

The American Warmblood

This is where the American Warmblood has an advantage. Other warmbloods have originated from certain regions of different counties. In our country we have horses from all these regions, so our breeders are able to “blend the best to the best”. To qualify as an American Warmblood, each horse must be inspected by a judge and achieve a passing score to qualify for registration. Scoring is judged on movement, disposition & temperament, and conformation. Fisher Ranch is very proud of the fact that our stallion’s get have all qualified and are registered with the American Warmblood Society.

Our Breeding Program

At Fisher Ranch, we practice Genotype breeding, where we outcross for certain characteristics. Also referred to as hybrid vigor, when you outcross lineage, whether within the same breed or different breeds to produce a great riding or performance type horse. Done correctly, this will take the best of both lines and put them together for a great horse.

Our goal at Fisher Ranch is to breed conformationally sound, large athletic horses with good bone, strong hooves, above average intelligence, kind dispositions, flowing forward movement and eye appeal.   After researching the different draft breeds, the Clydesdale was our top choice. It took another 2 years to find the perfect stallion, but well worth the wait. “Joe” has since proven himself, time and again. Another added bonus for us manure pickers, his get are very neat in their stalls.

All our mares have been hand selected to enhance our stallion’s characteristics. Along with conformation and movement, we also consider the disposition, physical and mental soundness of our mares.  All of our mares are good mannered even if in heat and have no “PMS” traits. We use  mostly Thoroughbred mares, and have added three colored mares with Thoroughbred and National Show Horse lines to add color and flare.
